Jammu and Kashmir: Despite low attendance Khir Bhawani festival witnesses Hindu-Muslim amity

Local Muslims welcome Pandit devotees at Khir Bhawani mela in Tullamulla

Despite a record low turnout in 2017, Muslims in Tullamulla kept their tradition of serving milk to Kashmiri Pandit pilgrims.

Local Muslims in Tullamulla, Ganderbal district, welcomed Kashmiri Pandit devotees with milk at the Khir Bhawani mela on 2 June 2017. Not more than 300 devotees came, a record low, which authorities blamed on false propaganda on social media. The shrine of goddess Mata Ragnya, about 29 km from Srinagar, hosts the most important festival of Kashmiri Pandits. Most Pandits left the valley in the early 1990s but many return each year for the mela.
